Man To Be Sentenced For Drunken Driving Shows Up Drunk

Deitrich Faces Maximum Sentence Of 12 Years In Prison

A Reedsburg man facing sentencing for his fifth drunken-driving offense has instead been taken back to jail after he appeared in court apparently intoxicated.

Verlyn R. Deitrich, 54, pleaded no contest in March to two felonies after prosecutors said that he drove with a blood-alcohol level about twice the legal limit. He faces a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Online court records said that he appeared in court Wednesday -- his 54th birthday -- but the judge and Deitrich's defense attorney agreed that he was drunk.

The judge ordered him jailed for violating the absolute-sobriety condition of his release on bond. He's due back in court Friday.

His defense attorney, Maura Melka, said that she never comments on any case.
