Two Killed In Stevens Point Plane Crash

STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- A veteran pilot from Green Bay and another person were killed when a single-engine plane crashed at the Stevens Point airport on Monday.Therese McGinn said that her husband, Dean McGinn, 56, was the pilot killed. She said that he was on vacation and flew to Stevens Point for no particular reason.Stevens Point police said that the passenger is believed to be a 70-year-old Green Bay man who McGinn was taking for a plane ride.McGinn's son, Tony McGinn, said that some problems developed just after the plane took off from the Stevens Point Municipal Airport and the plane was circling to land again when it crashed at about 5 p.m. The son said that he didn't know who the passenger was.Tony McGinn said that his father learned to fly in the Navy in the late 1970s and had purchased the 1971 Piper about two years ago.Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said investigators were at the scene of the crash in a clearing east of the runway. FAA investigators were sent to the scene Monday night.Authorities said that the single-engine plane apparently had taken off and was returning to the airport.Portage County Coroner Scott Rifleman said the victims were being transported to Madison for autopsies on Tuesday.
