Resolution: Infected Deer Should Not Be Allowed In Dane County Landfill

A task force in Madison voted unanimously Monday night not to allow deer infected with chronic wasting disease to be buried in the Dane County landfill.

Part of the county is included in a 374-square-mile area where game managers want all deer to be killed to prevent the spread of the fatal brain disease.

Chronic wasting disease has been found in 24 deer killed in Mount Horeb and the surrounding area -- the first incidence of the disease east of the Mississippi River.

The task force also discussed a plan allowing bow hunters to shoot deer in four county parks that are in the so-called eradication zone. That plan was tabled, and the group plans to discuss it at a later date.

The task force said the new resolution would help make sure the United States does not get in the same situation as Great Britain with mad cow disease.

"They knew they had a problem when about 15 young people, people in their teens and 20s were getting the disease," said Brett Hulsey, vice chairman of the task force. "They didn't have a good monitoring system so obviously, we don't think we're going to find that."

The group also voted against ending the special summer hunts.

Resolutions will now go before the full county board Sept. 5.
