Local Officials To Release New Details In Zimmermann Case

Authorities Still Search For Student's Killer

UPDATED: 3:54 pm CDT May 5, 2008

Dane County officials said on Monday that they plan to release new information regarding the killing of a University of Wisconsin-Madison student but gave no details on when.

This follows last week's revelation that the Dane County 911 Center received a call from 21-year-old Brittany Zimmermann's cell phone on the day she was killed. However, a 911 dispatcher hung up on the call and then failed to call back, which violates protocol. Police officers were never sent to investigate.

The news touched off a public round of fingerpointing between Madison police and various local and county officials about whether there was enough information from the call to prompt police to respond. The dispatcher who answered the call has since been transferred to another county job, WISC-TV reported.

On Thursday, Madison Police Chief Noble Wray told reporters that the 911 call contained evidence that should have prompted the dispatcher to immediately send police to Zimmermann's home the day she was killed.

On Friday, Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk denied any human error occurred in the incident, saying information released this week would explain why.

Topf Wells, Falk's chief of staff, said on Monday morning that the new information would include details about the 911 call. He said that officials are wary of jeopardizing the on-going investigation or prosecution.

"We want to be careful," Wells said.

Meanwhile, the search for Zimmermann's killer is continuing. The student was found inside her West Doty Street apartment on April 2. Police said the UW-Madison junior was killed after her assailant broke into her first-floor apartment. Zimmermann's fiancé later found the woman's body in the two-flat house that they shared. Police said that the fiancé isn't considered a suspect.

During this weekend's Mifflin Street Block Party, friends and relatives of Zimmermann were selling food and collecting donations for a memorial fund in the student's honor.
