MADISON, Wis. -- Sunday's sunshine was a welcome sign for southern Wisconsin's first fishing weekend of the year.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportAs many eagar angelers sought to get their lines in the water, the state Department of Natural Resources was taking time this weekend to remind them of safety first this fishing season."The biggest thing we're looking for is safety," said DNR conservation warden Jason Happe.Happe and fellow warden Nate Kroeplin kept an eye out for safety violators over the weekend."You can kind of see what's going on and who's doing what," said Kroeplin.Wardens said one of the first things they check is for valid registrations, fishing licenses and life vests. The DNR is also sharing new rules with anglers, in order to combat VHS, the deadly virus threatening some fish in the state."If you take your minnows out on the water, if they touch any part of the water then they can be taken from the water but they can only be brought back to the waters," Happe explained to anglers on Sunday. The cool weekend weather meant a slow start to the season, but it didn't keep avid fishermen from Lake Mendota."It's just peaceful to be out here, quiet relaxing the phone doesn't ring and sometimes the fish bite," said one happy angler. The DNR Web site has a complete list of fishing safety tips and rules.
