Doyle Breaks Ground On Wisconsin Institutes For Discovery
Facility To Be Completed In 2010

MADISON, Wis. -- Gov. Jim Doyle broke ground Friday on a new multimillion dollar research complex in Madison.The Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery is a $150 million public-private research complex that will help develop stem cell technology and other scientific research.When it's completed in 2010, the facility on the 1300 block of University Avenue will bring together the brightest researchers in the country."Hopefully we will design it in a way that that kind of knowledge transfer will take place to all kinds of students and researchers and folks who frequent it," said John Morgridge.John and Tasha Morgridge donated $50 million to the project.Officials said the private part of the project, called the Morgridge Institute for Research, will help researchers convert their discoveries into commercial ventures that hopefully will create jobs in the state.Stem cell pioneer James Thomson is the first scientist to officially sign on to the institutes. When it's complete, the goal is to have more than 250 researchers working at the facility, WISC-TV reported.
