Reverse 911 Helps Locate Missing Elderly Woman

Portage Police Sent Out Alert

Updated: 3:56 pm CDT May 2,2008

The Portage Police Department activated a reverse 911 system Friday afternoon to locate a missing 84-year-old woman.

The A Child Is Missing organization sent out 1,000 calls to residents in the area. The calls described the missing woman and asked anyone with leads to call Portage police.

The ACIM alert program is a national program that assists in the search of missing children, the elderly -- often with Alzheimer's disease -- and the disabled in the first critical hours of their disappearance.

Police said that 12 minutes of the calls being placed, a citizen who had received one of the calls called the Portage Police Department and reported that he was looking out his window and saw the missing woman standing in a wooded area behind a business.

Portage police Lt. Mark Hahn said that officers went to the area and were able to locate the woman and return her safely to her assisted living facility.

The Portage Police Department said that this was the first time that it sent out reverse calls.
