Area residents got a first look on Friday night at damage after what's believed to be a tornado tore through portions of Columbia County.

The brunt of the storm hit the Town of Wyocena, which is about 45 minutes north of Madison, WISC-TV reported.

Thankfully, no one was inside Brandon Smith's home when a tornado apparently ripped right through it on Friday afternoon.

"I was just off to Pardeevile and a tornado siren went off," Smith said. "(I) went to my parent's house and they said it was right by my house."

But Smith said that he didn't have to pull up to the drive to see what happened to his house.

"I'm driving up the road, see all the fire trucks, I slow down and go, 'Oh crap!'" he said.

It's probably the last time anyone will hear Smith say the current housing market is a buyer's market.

"I just bought the house a little less than a month ago. I moved in two weeks ago," he said.

Ralph Pulver, captain of the Wyocena Fire Department, said that the storm's winds carried debris into the neighborhood from across town.

"One of the neighbors here has parts of a salvage yard located probably two miles away from here," Pulver said.

Gary Hueber, owner of Wyocena Auto Parts & Sales, said that he saw the storm's fury.

"Parts were going by the window and I look out and the neighbor's trailer is rolling into his garage. And then I decided if I should keep looking or duck," Hueber said.

Gary's son, Clint Hueber, said he saw the storm's power, too.

"The winds going this way and stuff's flying that way, so I had to make a decision on whether to drive or run and hide," he said.

Sandy Cady said that she was watching the storm approach.

"It looked like it just split apart. So I really wasn't worried, and then all of a sudden, we saw bunch of dirt fly and we just ran down to the basement really quick," she said.

Cady said that she didn't hear much except for debris. Now, debris litters the lawn at her horse farm. Two barns were completely destroyed and another was heavily damaged.

"Its part of your livelihood and its very devastating," she said, with her voice quivering slightly. "I just don't know. It's a big, big mess."

Oregon storm chaser Jacob Krueger said that he saw a tornado move through the area.

"It came down, and then it kind of came up a little bit. And then it came down and stayed on the ground for about five minutes. As it was coming up, that's when I saw a whole bunch of debris flying up," Krueger said

One area homeowner said that he was too shaken to talk. He was inside his house when the storm tossed his camper onto his garage. At another home, the storm wreaked havoc on a Columbia County sheriff's deputy's squad car.

Sheriff's Deputy Scott Oelke said that he saw the twister right as it touched down. He said he ran inside his home and took his family down the stairs.

The damage from the tornado stretches about three to four miles. Residents and responders alike said that they think everyone was lucky.

"We've got about five or six places that we found damage. So far, not any real extensive damage that we can document so far and no injuries, which is the main part -- no one injured in the storm," said Patrick Beghin, of Columbia County emergency management.

One Wyocena resident said that they saw the sky spinning with debris turning in the air. They likened the experience to watching a scene in a movie.

While some in Wyocena have a long weekend ahead, one local homeowner promises he'll be alright with his fixer-upper.

"This could be fixed up in a little bit and back to new, I think," Smith said.
