BARABOO, Wis. -- Baraboo police are looking into what led to the deaths of twin infants found in a home on Sunday night.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportOfficers were called to a residence in the 1400 block of Lake Street at about 8 p.m. to check on the welfare of the 5-week-old twins and their 45-year-old father, according to a Police Department news release. At first, authorities said that no one could be roused in the home. When officers entered the home, they found the father lying in bed and then discovered the two children -- a boy and girl -- were dead. The babies' mother doesn't live in the same residence and wasn't present when police arrived. Authorities said she isn't considered a suspect.Baraboo Police Lt. Rob Sinden said that all the city's resources are currently dedicated to the suspicious death investigation, WISC-TV reported."It's an extremely traumatic situation," he said. "It's not only traumatic for the citizens of our community, or really in any community, but it's traumatic for those emergency services workers who have been involved heavily in this case as well."Police said that the father is currently in custody on a probation hold. WISC-TV and Channel 3000 aren't identifying the father because he hasn't been charged with a crime.Authorities said that the police, along with the State Crime Lab and Sauk County coroner's office, are investigating.Investigators said that they don't have a cause of death for the children, named Savannah and Tyler , according to neighbors, but the Sauk County coroner began an autopsy on Monday morning. Authorities said the autopsies will take longer because there are two bodies.Investigators said they have no evidence to believe anyone else is in danger following the deaths. Some residents who live in the Lake Street area in Baraboo said they were shocked by the news of the infants' deaths."It's something you wouldn't expect at all," said neighbor Jeff Anderson."I'm shocked. I didn't know anyone over here would do such a thing," said nearby resident Matt Padley. "I think it's disturbing whether in a big city or not, but when it's close to your home, it definitely makes you stop and think."Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
