MADISON, Wis. -- Madison police said that officers will be posting fliers in the Bassett neighborhood and other areas downtown seeking information about last week's slaying of Brittany Zimmermann. The 21-year-old University of Wisconsin-Madison student was found dead in her West Doty Street apartment near campus.Madison Crime Stoppers has received approximately 200 tips in the Zimmermann case. In addition, police said about 25 new tips have come in reference the Joel Marino homicide.Marino was killed on Jan. 28, and prior to Zimmermann's slaying, around 70 tips had been received in the Marino investigation.Police said they are investigating some similarities between the cases. Police said that both Zimmermann and Marino were killed inside their homes, during daylight hours and that no motive has been established in either case. Police also said that there appears to be nothing in either victim's background that would make them targets of violence. But police said investigators still do not know if the cases are connected. Police noted differences in the cases, such as signs of forced entry in the Zimmermann case whereas there was no evidence of forced entry in the Marino case.Because Marino and Zimmermann lived about a mile or so apart, police said detectives working on the Marino case are coming across information that might help the Zimmermann case, and detectives working on the Zimmermann case are finding information that might aid the Marino investigation.Madison police said they are actively investigating both cases.
