Police: Signs Of Forced Entry At Zimmermann's Building

UW Student Was Found Slain Last Week

UPDATED: 8:01 am CDT April 11, 2008

Madison police said on Thursday that there were signs of forced entry in the building where University of Wisconsin student Brittany Zimmermann was found dead last week.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the 21-year-old's killing and have questioned several people, but have named no suspect or suspects in the week-old case.

Police Chief Noble Wray released the details, which are some of the first bits of information about last week's slaying that have been revealed by authorities.

Joel DeSpain, Madison Police Department spokesman, said that Wray and investigators deliberated for some time before releasing the information but ultimately decided it was in the public interest to do so.

DeSpain said key details like this are often withheld to help investigators determine whether witnesses or even perpetrators are giving out truthful information when questioned.

Zimmermann was found dead by her fiancé on April 2 after 1 p.m. in the 500 block of West Doty Street apartment that they shared. The two-flat house is located near the UW-Madison campus and their apartment was located on the first floor, WISC-TV reported.

An autopsy conducted last week determined that Zimmermann died of "a complexity of traumatic injuries," but authorities weren't specific and questions linger about the manner of Zimmermann's death. A 911 log recorded that Zimmermann's fiancé said that she had been shot, but an unnamed source told WISC-TV that the woman had been stabbed.

Zimmermann's funeral was held Monday morning at St. Andrew's Church in Stratford. She was buried near her home in Marshfield.
