Boston Mayor Suggested For UW Chancellor Job

Mayor Received Packet From School

Updated: 12:31 pm CDT April 3, 2008

Will Boston Mayor Thomas Menino be tempted to leave Massachusetts for the land of cheeseheads and dairy cows?

No, but someone has floated Menino's name to be the next chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

A thick packet arrived from the school a few weeks ago, laying out the benefits of a job at the UW campus. The job pays up to $452,000 per year, a lot more than the $175,000 Menino currently makes.

The mayor said that he had no idea who nominated him, and told a radio station: "I'm a Beantown guy, not a cheesehead."

Such a job would be a big departure for the mayor known for his street-level political skills -- and his lack of polish. As chancellor, he'd have to design curricula, set degree requirements and determine academic standards.
