Name Of Dane County Deputy Injured In Chase Released

Officer Suffered Trauma To Legs

Updated: 10:12 am CDT March 30, 2008

Authorities have released the name of the Dane County sheriff's deputy who was struck and seriously injured Friday afternoon during a high-speed chase.

Deputy Dale Veto, a 16-year veteran of the Dane County Sheriff's Office, was hurt during the pursuit. He was transported by MedFlight to University of Wisconsin Hospital.

The deputy suffered significant, non-life threatening trauma to his legs, in particular to his right leg. He will have several medical procedures in the coming days and might be hospitalized for an extended period of time, according to officials.

He was assigned to the Town of Burke/Town of Bristol Contract Deputy Position for the past eight years, WISC-TV reported.

Veto was hurt by the fleeing car while trying to deploy road spikes at Highway 151 near County Highway V in Sun Prairie. Elise Schaeffer, public information officer for the Dane County Sheriff's Office, said the vehicle swerved to avoid hitting the spikes and hit the deputy instead.

Authorities said the 15-year-old motorist was arrested after the chase.

Madison police started the chase after a routine traffic stop on Milwaukee Street just off of Stoughton Road. Police said the car fled and officers suspended the chase, which was later picked up by Dane County sheriff's deputies.

Authorities said after the deputy was struck, the chase resumed in Cottage Grove, with the driver heading south on Interstate 94. The State Patrol took the lead and again deployed road spikes.

Authorities said they arrested the teen suspected in the pursuit east of Johnson Creek in Jefferson County. Authorities said Friday night that the teen is being held at the Dane County Juvenile Reception Center on tentative charges of eluding and operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office is conducting the criminal investigation and officials said they expect more charges to be forthcoming.

Authorities said the car was believed to have been stolen in Stoughton.

A car matching the description of the car in the chase was reported missing from the Serenity House, a residential care center for youth in Stoughton. Serenity House said it is working with law enforcement, but authorities are not saying if the suspect is connected with the facility.

Highway 151 northbound was closed near the crossroad of County Highway V for a few hours Friday afternoon and motorists experienced significant traffic delays in the area. The northbound lanes were reopened Friday evening, WISC-TV reported.
