UW, Meriter Hospitals Ban Smoking, Tobacco Products

Ban Starts Wednesday At Meriter

Updated: 2:28 pm CDT March 28, 2008

The grounds of University of Wisconsin and Meriter hospitals in Madison are to go smoke-free beginning next week.

The school said that the ban at UW Hospital, which includes the areas surrounding nearby health sciences buildings on the school campus, is being instituted for the health of students, employees and visitors. Officials said that it brings the hospital in compliance with national and state regulatory agencies.

No tobacco will be allowed as of Wednesday on property around UW Hospital, American Family Children's Hospital, the schools of medicine and public health, nursing, pharmacy, the Carbone Cancer Center and the Waisman Center.

The ban at Meriter Hospital takes effect Monday.

Meriter spokeswoman Mae Knowles said that hospital officials hope the move helps everybody lead a more healthy lifestyle.

St. Mary's Hospital in Madison implemented a smoke-free policy in 2004.
