Police Chief Fred Kelley said the fire was reported about 12:30 a.m. The blaze broke out in a home off 16th Street on the city's east side.

When authorities arrived, the home was engulfed in flames. Kelley said that police tried to get into the home to reach the man, Jeffrey R. Sullivan, after the rest of his family made it out safe, but they couldn't because of heavy smoke and flames.

Firefighters arrived a few minutes later and found Sullivan in a basement room. He was taken to an area hospital where he died from fire-related injuries.

The home's four other occupants made it out safe. A 16-year-old girl sustained fire-related injuries.

Many neighbors said that they didn't really know the family, but were deeply saddened by this tragedy.

"I heard a noise. I couldn't figure out what it was it sounded like screaming," said neighbor Shirley Keegan. "Well then, I came out in the porch and then the cops came.

"It was just smoke all over the place. I didn't see flames. That's what I couldn't figure out," she said.

Sullivan was an area supervisor at the Monroe McDonald's and one of his sons was a paper boy in the neighborhood, WISC-TV reported.

Because of the extent of the damage to the house, the family is displaced and friends and family are helping them.

Monroe police and fire marshals said that they are investigating what caused the blaze.
