Chavez: Mold Free In 2003?

District Officials Confident School Will Reopen In Fall

More work is needed, but district officials still say Chavez Elementary will open in the fall.

The months of cleanup and reconstruction should end the first week in August. Teachers and staff are expected to begin preparing for the school year beginning Aug. 5.

Although the inside work will be finished, district officials say they will be repairing the edge of the roof to better drain water; as well as peeling back the brick to replace some of the metal flashing, News 3 reported.

Only two areas of flashing will be replaced rather than all of it, reducing costs from $200,000 down to $20,000.

Some teachers suing over the mold are concerned that the school repairs are based off a consultant's report they have yet to see. They feel the report should be posted on the district's Web site for all to see.

Of the 71 staff members at Chavez only six will not return in the fall.

The bill for Chavez's repairs and reconstruction are estimated at $1.6 million.
