Smoking Ban Appears Snuffed Out In Legislature
Armstrong Attended Rally Last Week

MADISON, Wis. -- Barring a last-minute breakthrough, a statewide smoking ban is about to go up in smoke in the state Legislature. The Assembly plans to finish its work for the year on Wednesday and the smoking ban wasn't scheduled for a vote. The Senate has likewise not taken a vote on the ban, which has to pass both chambers and be signed by Gov. Jim Doyle before it becomes law.Doyle has been advocating for the ban for months, but it met with staunch opposition from the powerful Tavern League lobby. The group didn't want the ban to start in bars at the same time as restaurants and other work places.Last week, a rally in favor of the ban was held in downtown Madison, which drew cycling legend Lance Armstrong. Some of those opposed to the ban have asked that the ban's effective date be delayed in the state's bars and taverns, but smoke-free advocates have said the delay isn't necessary.
