The Wisconsin State Crime Lab scientists said that they've confirmed that the male DNA found on a knife recovered at the crime scene matches DNA found on a white cap and a backpack that police discovered after the killing of Joel Marino.

Police detectives said that they believe the DNA belongs to Marino's killer, authorities said.

Detectives said that the DNA sample from the man hasn't been found in the State Crime Lab's database system. Joel DeSpain, Madison police's public information specialist, said that authorities need the community's help in identifying Marino's attacker.

"So, we're asking for the public's help again trying to determine who this person is by giving us information about the knife, the backpack, the hat or best yet, a name for this person," DeSpain said.

Marino, 31, was found unresponsive in an alley just off the 700 block of South Park Street, near West Shore Drive, on Jan. 28. Authorities said Marino died from stab wounds and that they are treating his death as a homicide. Police said the stabbing might have occurred inside Marino's nearby home and that it might have been random.

On Monday, Madison police investigators said that they believe Marino was home all morning during the day of his killing and was stabbed in his house between 1 p.m. and 1:20 p.m.

They said that they believe his attacker likely fled the home and ran southbound on West Shore Drive. During his flight, the man discarded the white cap and Puma backpack in the West Shore neighborhood. Police said that the man was last seen near the intersection of South Park and Parr Streets.

Authorities said that the knife believed to be the murder weapon is described as an "OXO" brand paring knife with a four-inch silver blade.

Investigators have also determined that the backpack that was recovered near the scene was bought at a State Street business on Friday afternoon, Jan. 25.

Police said that they're continuing to search for the man wanted in connection to Marino's death and are asking for the public's assistance. They said that they believe the man might live in or is associated with the State Street area.

"Because of that, there's the possibility that this person lives in and around the State Street area or frequents State Street," DeSpain said.

He is described as a white man, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall, with a thin build and blond or light brown hair. They believe the man is in his 20s and he was last seen wearing a tan, Carhardt-type jacket. with blond or light brown hair.

Authorities said a reward of more than $40,000 is being offered for information in connection to the case. Those with information are asked to call Madison Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.
