Officials To Meet This Week

MADISON, Wis. -- State lawmakers are unhappy with rules designed to combat a deadly fish virus in Wisconsin. The state Department of Natural Resources wants to enact permanent regulations that would prohibit anglers from removing live fish from any state water. The Assembly Natural Resources Committee said it's not fair to punish anglers far from areas where the viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) virus has been detected. So far the virus has been found only in the Lake Winnebago system. The DNR and lawmakers plan to meet this week to discuss possible compromises. They'll have to work fast. Temporary rules to control VHS expire this month and spring is an active time for the virus. The virus causes fish to bleed to death, officials said.
