Study: Madison, Appleton Doing Fine Without Smoking
Report Found Requests For Liquor Licenses Increased

MADISON, Wis. -- A new report by an advocacy group pushing for a statewide smoking ban said that the economies of Madison and Appleton have been doing just fine since the cities banned smoking in public places.The study by the Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group finds that requests for liquor licenses in Madison and Appleton have actually increased since the smoking bans took effect.It also found that the average assessed property value in business districts in both cities has increased since the laws started in 2005.A statewide smoking ban has stalled in the state Legislature under opposition from tavern owners.
