MADISON, Wis. -- Madison police said new evidence in the stabbing death of a man last month means that a person of interest in the case is now a suspect.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportPolice said that the suspect was seen just days before the killing on State Street during the afternoon hours of Jan. 25, WISC-TV reported.Three days later, Joel Marino, 31, was found unresponsive in an alley just off the 700 block of South Park Street, near West Shore Drive. Authorities said Marino (pictured, right) died from stab wounds and that they are treating his death as a homicide. Police said the stabbing might have occurred inside Marino's nearby home and that it might have been random."We have run down a lot of things, some of which looked very good at the time, and then they fizzle out. It happens with every investigation. But there's still great hope that we'll find Joel Marino's killer," said Joel DeSpain, public information officer with the Madison Police Department. The suspect is described as a white man, possibly in his 20s with a thin build, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall and with blond or light brown hair. The man was last seen wearing a tan, Carhart-type jacket and a white stocking cap with a red motion "W" on the front.Police will not say what leads them to believe the suspect was in that area.Amanda Miller, Joel Marino's girlfriend of two years, said she has a heard time not thinking about the massive hole left in her heart four weeks ago."Every minute seems like an hour. It's hard to be without him, to not have him around. I'm constantly thinking of him," Miller said.Bryan Bazan said he still wonders who could have killed his best friend."It's only been four weeks but it seems like it's been about a year since this happened," Bazan said. Both said they are cautiously optimistic about the new information in the case."You don't want to get too excited -- it's not like they've solved the case. But it's a step in the right direction," Bazan said."It gives you a little bit of hope that they're working hard on trying to find who did this and bringing that person to justice," Miller said. "You're closer to closure. We're getting there, and it's a good step."Authorities said that anyone with information on the possible identity of this suspect is asked to call Crimestoppers at 608-266-6014Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
