In the telephone survey conducted Wednesday and Thursday, Obama, a U.S. senator from Illionis, has 47 percent support among likely Democratic primary voters. Clinton, a U.S. senator from New York and the former first lady, is close behind with 42 percent. Eleven percent of respondents said they were still undecided ahead of Tuesday's statewide primary.

Do you plan to cast a vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary on Tuesday?

On the Republican side, GOP presidential frontrunner U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., leads former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee 48 percent to 32 percent. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, received 7 percent support and 13 percent of likely GOP voters said they were undecided.

The firm Research 2000 conducted the statewide poll, which was paid for by WISC-TV. About 600 likely voters participated in the survey with an over sample of 400 likely voters for both the Democratic and Republican primary races. The margin of error for the primary match-ups is plus or minus 5 percent.

University of Wisconsin-Madison political science professor Charles Franklin said the results are consistent with poll results from recent primaries.

"Our results in this poll are very consistent with what we saw in the exit polls Tuesday night," Franklin said. "The question is, 'Will it continue?' We know the polls have had some hiccups, shall we say, in predicting the outcome."

A closer look at the numbers in the Democratic race shows that Obama has very strong support among black voters. He beat Clinton 84 percent to 5 percent. However, among Hispanics, Clinton holds a sizable lead over Obama. About 54 percent of Hispanics sided with Clinton, compared with 34 percent for Obama.

There is also a sizable gender gap in the Democratic race. Among men, Obama has 53 percent support compared to Clinton's 36 percent. Women favor Clinton over Obama, 47 percent to 42 percent.
