Doyle Names Replacement For UW Regent Who Quit In Protest
Vasquez Succeeds Salas

MADISON, Wis. -- Gov. Jim Doyle has picked a Wauwatosa man to be a member of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents.Doyle said that Jose Vasquez will join the 18-member board immediately. Vasquez heads a Milwaukee nonprofit that provides services to children and seniors.Vasquez replaces Jesus Salas, who resigned last year to protest the way the governor has treated illegal immigrants.Salas accused Doyle of not fighting hard enough for a plan to allow illegal immigrants who graduate from Wisconsin high schools to qualify for in-state tuition.He also was unhappy Doyle signed laws designed to stop illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses and state-subsidized home loans.
