Regents Approve Higher Pay For Next UW-Madison Leader

Officials Said Pay Hike Is Necessary To Recruit New Chancellor

UPDATED: 11:14 am CST February 8, 2008

The University of Wisconsin System regents have approved a plan that could dramatically increase the salary of UW-Madison's next chancellor.

The regents set a pay range of $370,000 to $452,000 per year for the position in an attempt to attract candidates for the job.

The actual salary won't be set until the regents name a successor for Chancellor John Wiley, who has announced that he will step down in September.

The regents also approved higher pay ranges for the chancellors of 11 four-year universities.

Regent Brent Smith said that the higher ranges are necessary to conduct successful searches for new chancellors at the Madison, Parkside and Whitewater campuses.
