UPDATED: 10:51 am CST February 8, 2008

The speaker of the state Assembly ordered a freeze on all hiring and travel to deal with a projected budget shortfall of nearly $400 million.

The state Legislature is already required to cut $6.3 million from the current state budget that ends on June 30, 2009.
