Friends, Family Hope Flyers Will Spur Someone's Memory In Marino's Death

800 Fliers Handed Out Day After Marino's Funeral

UPDATED: 7:56 am CST February 4, 2008

Friends and family of homicide victim Joel Marino say that they won't rest until his killer is caught.

Nearly one week ago, Marino was found in an alley off South Park Street. He had been fatally stabbed. He was laid to rest on Saturday.

On Sunday, those same friends and family who gathered to mourn his death, gathered again, but this time to ask the community for help in finding those responsible, WISC-TV reported.

A group of 35 people went door-to-door in the neighborhood where the crime happened, handing out fliers and hoping to find some answers.

"Now that we've gotten a little bit of closure with the services, we're really motivated to finding whoever was responsible for this and that's our motivation for being out here today," said friend Bryan Bazan.

Bazan said this was something that his best friend would have done for him.

"We liked to call him 'Genuine Joel.' He was probably one of the most genuine persons you would have met," said Bazan. "I know he would have been the first one to be here, ready to hand out fliers if this would have happened to someone else."

That's part of the reason Lori Kuhn and her family got involved.

"We live eight houses down from him and were just shocked by the events and what had happened," said Kuhn. "We have two children under the age of 2 and want to get involved in whatever we can to make sure that our neighborhood is safe."

More than 800 fliers will be posted throughout the area with the aim that someone who saw something will come forward, WISC-TV reported.

"No detail is too small," said Bazan. "Any information, whether or not you think it has anything to do with the case, that's the kind of information that we need."

Authorities are asking anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014. There as a $35,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
