Funeral Held For South Side Stabbing Victim

Man Found Unreponsive In Alley Near Park Street

Updated: 10:25 pm CST February 2, 2008

Family and friends paid their final respects on Saturday to Joel Marino, the 31-year-old Madison resident who was found stabbed outside his home on Monday and died a short time later at University of Wisconsin Hospital.

Police said that while the investigation continues, the attack could have been random, WISC-TV reported.

Both police investigators and the victim's friends said that Marino was "just a good guy." On this cold, snowy Saturday, Marino's family and friends said their goodbyes.

After Saturday's service, Marino's best friend, Bryan Bazan, said that the funeral brings only partial closer to his friend's death.

"It was a very moving service," Bazan said. "It was great to see the support and the number of people who came throughout the community -- to really support Joel, and his family, and his memory."

But this is only partial closure, he said. Bazan and others said that they're bound and determined to find the person responsible for Marino's death.

"Somewhere, somebody saw something -- or somebody knows something," Bazan said. "The reward fund is already over $35,000, and we're really hoping that will motivate someone to get out there and give that key piece of information that's going to lead to the person that's responsible for this."

It's been an emotionally trying week for those close to Marino. The church on Saturday was packed with people, and it's thought close to 1,500 people attended Friday's visitation, WISC-TV reported.

"Today really solidified for his family what a big part of their life Joel was," Bazan said. "Everywhere he went, he left a piece of himself behind -- with his friends, his co-workers, people that knew Joel. And it's fantastic to see so many people come out and support him."

Family and friends are expected to be in the West Shore Drive area on Sunday, to hand out fliers to residents and business owners.
