Parents Sound Off Over Possible School Boundary Changes

Board To Decide Plan In March

Updated: 9:05 am CST January 29,2008

Dozens of concerned parents filed before the Madison Metropolitan School District's Board of Education meeting on Monday night to voice their concerns over possible boundary changes for the upcoming year.

The first proposal, Plan A, would divide the Valley Ridge neighborhood between Crestwood and Falk Elementary schools.

However, the board heard so much opposition to this plan that there are three more options, reported WISC-TV.

Plan B would keep students in the Valley Ridge neighborhood at Stephens Elementary instead of moving students from other neighborhoods including Spring Harbor and Junction Road.

"There was one that was plan B, and there was the least amount of movement with that plan," said Valley Ridge parent Dirk Todd. "It kept most of the schools in tact. While it's not perfect, we can live with that one."

Plan C calls for a pairing of Stephens and Crestwood Elementaries. Plan D calls for Crestwood to be paired with Falk Elementary.

Dana Bobbins' son Soren will attend kindergarten next year. She said she is adamantly opposed to plans C and D.

"The idea that Soren, instead of walking two minutes to his neighborhood school, will have to stand at a bus stop, most likely across the street from Crestwood to be bussed across town, strikes me as ridiculous."

Another parent voiced similar concerns.

"In a changing environment where environmental concerns are key, we've got global climate change going on, we've got fuel costs that are rocketing and I think we really need to think about the carbon footprint of this decision," said resident Cris Carusi.

The school board plans to hold another hearing in February before deciding on a plan in March.
