A 150-year-old oak tree that has been a landmark in southern Wisconsin will soon be gone.

The tree is being removed to make way for the expansion of state Highway 26 between Milton and Fort Atkinson. The tree sits just north of the Rock-Jefferson county line in Janesville.

Officials said cutting the massive tree down is the only real option as it would be expensive and difficult to safely move it to another location.

State transportation officials told the Janesville Gazette for a story published Thursday that they also can't move the highway around the tree because that would create more problems.
