Advance Forecast For Packers Game: High Of 6 Degrees

Wind Chill Advisory Issued For Southern Wisconsin

Updated: 8:48 am CST January 18, 2008

The only weather forecast about which Wisconsin residents seem to care right now is the one for the weekend at Lambeau Field.

The Packers host the New York Giants on Sunday for a Super Bowl berth. Meteorologists said they're expecting that day to be sunny and cold with a high of 6 degrees.

Wind chill readings could reach 20 to 35 degrees below zero over the weekend.

A wind chill advisory has been issued for much of southern Wisconsin from midnight Friday into Sunday.

Experts said that people should take extra precautions to stay warm and dress appropriately for the cold weather this weekend.

"Anytime we could protect ourselves from the environment, were going to be better off keeping those extreme temperatures off our skin," said Lt. Chris Ernst, of the Madison Fire Department.

Dr. Steven Jacobson, an emergency room doctor at St. Mary's Hospital, said it's especially important for people to wear hats and to keep their heads warm.

"The skull and scalp is very vascular, so it has the potential to lose a lot of heat. And the head is one of the (often) exposed areas. And ears are one of the high-risk places for people to get frostbite," Jacobson said.

Experts said it's important to be dressed appropriately and to be prepared if one gets stuck out in the cold.
