MADISON, Wis. -- The increase in Wisconsin's cigarette tax seems to have inspired many to quit. The week after the state's tax went into effect, Wisconsin's phone service to help people break the habit received as many calls as it got all of last year.About 9,000 people called the toll-free line in the first week of January. Usually only about 200 people a week call the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line. The cigarette tax increased by $1 per pack on Jan. 1.Gov. Jim Doyle touted the numbers this week as he pushed the state Legislature to pass another part of his anti-smoking initiative and ban smoking in all workplaces, bars and restaurants.Legislative leaders have said that chances of passing that ban are slim because of opposition from the tavern industry and its supporters.
