A fire at an apartment complex on Madison's south side early Monday morning forced a number of residents from their homes, according to the Madison Fire Department.
Firefighters were called to the fire at the Nob Hill Apartments in the 1100 block of Moorland Road around 1:20 a.m. Monday.
Fire officials said when crews arrived, they encountered heavy smoke before they found the fire in a first-floor apartment.
Crews were able to knock down the fire within 12 minutes, according to the fire department. Fire officials said a resident on the second floor of the apartment complex called in the fire when his smoke detector went off.
Fire investigators continue to investigate the cause of the blaze. Damage is estimated at $150,000.
Some parts of the building remain unstable. Residents on those areas are being helped by the American Red Cross.
