What's Going Around: Winter Car Seat Safety

Experts Advise On Fitting Child Into Car Seat Properly

Updated: 8:58 am CST January 7, 2008

With winter in full swing, children are typically bundled up in coats and snowsuits.

However, all of that extra clothing can compromise a child's car seat safety, authorities said.

Health experts said in order for a car seat or booster seat to fit property, the straps need to remain tight against the child's chest.

Thick winter clothing can change the way a child fits into a car seat. Safety experts warn that if the car seat straps don't fit the child properly, there is a chance that the child could be ejected from the car seat, WISC-TV reported.

"You should really keep in mind the fact that you could get into a car accident between you house and your destination and that seatbelt isn't intended to work over a bunch of bulky clothing," said a St. Mary's nurse.

Safety experts warn that car seat straps should be adjusted to fig snugly, even over winter coats.
