Posted: 9:39 pm CST January 6, 2008

Friends and mourners attending a visitation for former Gov. Lee Sherman Dreyfus remembered him Sunday as humble, warm and smart.

The 81-year-old known for his loquaciousness and trademark red vest died Wednesday at his Waukesha home while watching television. He had suffered for years from heart and breathing problems.

About 500 people came to the Lee Sherman Dreyfus state office building in Waukesha to pay respects on Sunday.

They included U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen and about a half-dozen state legislators.

Visitors streamed past three television screens showing videos of Dreyfus and stopped at his casket.

Fellow Masonic members paid tribute to Dreyfus, who was a member for more than 50 years with a prayer service.

Private funeral services and burial are planned for Monday.
