Wisconsin Cigarette Tax Jumps $1 On January 1

Retailers: Cigarettes Flying Off Shelves Before New Year's Day

POSTED: 10:05 pm CST December 30, 2007

Wisconsin smokers will have another reason to quit smoking in the New Year.

On Jan. 1, the cost of cigarettes will go up $1, thanks to a new cigarette tax.

Retailers said they're seeing a surge in people buying in bulk before the tax increase, reported WISC-TV.

One store said a customer went so far as to buy 40 cartons, which are 400 packs all at once.

"The sales until the end of the year will be good," said Tobacco Outlet Plus' Bart Probst. "After that, people are going to start rolling their own cigarettes, making their own."

On Jan. 1, Wisconsin will have the 12th highest tax on cigarettes in the country.
