Supreme Court Endorses Public Financing For Races

Justices Sent Letters To Legislature, Governor

Updated: 5:22 pm CST December 11, 2007

All seven members of the state Supreme Court have signed a letter in support of public financing of elections to that panel.

The court members sent the letter on Monday to members of the Legislature and Gov. Jim Doyle.

The justices said that public financing of Supreme Court campaigns is important to maintain a fair, neutral, impartial and nonpartisan judiciary in Wisconsin.

A proposal in the Legislature would create 100 percent publicly financed Supreme Court races.

Lawmakers are expected to consider it early next year.

The justices said in the letter that they are not writing to support any particular proposal, but the idea of public financing in general.
