New Campus High-Rise Plans Temporarily On Hold

City Officials Ask Developer To Move Historic Homes

UPDATED: 8:12 am CST December 4, 2007

The Madison planning council has referred plans for a new high-rise near the University of Wisconsin campus.

The 14-story building is being planned for 1022 West Johnson St. The student housing facility will include 162 units from efficiencies to four-bedroom apartments, officials said.

The catch is that the building site includes two historic homes built around 1900, WISC-TV reported.

The Common Council has asked the developer to relocate the historic homes. The high-rise plans won't be approved until alternative sites for the homes are found, officials said.

The homes at 1022 West Johnson St. and 309 North Mills St. are owned by two religious organizations.

Developers would like to begin construction on the new high-rise in the spring, WISC-TV reported.
