Doyle Calls On Legislature To Pass Smoking Ban, Autism Coverage
Legislature To Meet In Special Session Next Week

MADISON, Wis. -- Gov. Jim Doyle is trying to turn up the heat on a statewide smoking ban and insurance coverage for autism during a series of news conferences on Monday.Doyle said that there's enough support to pass bills on both issues during the state Legislature's special session next week. After that, the Legislature is off until Jan.15.Parents with autistic children say insurance coverage is crucial in order to get services in time to have a dramatic impact on development. Insurance companies oppose the mandate.More than 1 in 200 children have autism in Wisconsin.Doyle is also calling for quick action on the smoking ban, saying both Illinois and Minnesota have passed similar laws. The governor said that if Wisconsin does nothing, it could become the "ashtray of the upper Midwest."Doyle has been pushing for a smoking ban for all the state's bars, restaurants and workplaces for about a year. Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker said that he wants to see a compromise on the issue before it's brought up.Doyle said on Monday that he has been in touch with key lawmakers and is hopeful something comes of the talks.
