Madison Man Pleads No Contest To Kidnapping, Rape

Police: Woman Abducted, Assaulted On 2 Occasions

Updated: 2:30 pm CST November 17, 2007

A 31-year-old Madison man was found guilty of abducting and raping two University of Wisconsin-Madison students on separate occasions last year.

Antonio Pope pleaded no contest Friday to two counts of kidnapping and two counts of first-degree sexual assault in the incidents.

He did so despite having written a letter last week to Dane County Circuit Judge John Markson saying that, because of his use of the drug ecstasy, he had no recollection of abducting the women in Madison, driving them to a vacant apartment in nearby Fitchburg and raping them.

Authorities said the women were abducted on Nov. 29 and Dec. 9.

Authorities said each of the victims told police that Pope held a knife to her throat, forced her into a car, then bound and blindfolded her.

Pope faces up to 46 years in prison and on extended supervision on each of the kidnapping convictions and up to 66 years in prison and on extended supervision on each of the rape convictions.
