SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. -- Sun Prairie residents on Tuesday voted to pass one of three questions on a school referendum that totaled nearly $100 million.
TALKBACK: What Do You ThinkSchool officials prepared the referendum, arguing that the initiatives are necessary to meet the challenges posed by the city's growing population and the accompanying influx of students, WISC-TV reported. On the ballot, residents were asked three questions. The first asked them to build a new high school for grades 10 through 12 and remodel the existing high school for grades 8 and 9 at a cost of $96 million.Residents approved building a new high school, with 4,106 voting yes and 3,089 voting no.For a home assessed at $200,000, residents will pay an extra $246 per year. The second question asked for more than $3 million for an eight-lane swimming pool. That initiative failed, with 3,747 voting against it and 3,422 voting for it.The last question asked voters for more than $300,000 for operation and maintenance costs for the swimming pool starting in the 2010-2011 school year. Currently, the school's swim teams must travel outside the district for practices and meets. That question also failed, with 3,989 residents voting no and 3,189 voting yes.School officials and school board members said Tuesday night that they were very happy that voters approved the new school."I am just elated, because a lot of people have worked for a long time on this project and it has been somewhat frustrating at times. But it has been a good process and everybody came together and found a plan that they could live with. Our kids are going to be well served, and I'm so thankful to the community for both working along the way and voting today," said Tim Culver, district administrator for the Sun Prairie School District.School district officials said they needed the funds to build classrooms for future students. They said that district-wide, the student population has been steadily increasing by 100 to 200 students a year, WISC-TV reported.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
