Officials: Freakfest Cleanup Smooth, Quick

Mayor Says Event Was Transformed

Updated: 8:06 am CDT October 29, 2007

Within an hour after Freakfest ended peacefully, the cleanup work began.

Public works crews hit State Street just after 2 a.m. on Sunday to clean up after the event. But city officials said it took several years to clean up the event itself, WISC-TV reported.

"It was much more uncontrolled (then)," said University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student David Ruszkiewicz, who attended Freakfest 2007. "Now, they've really put a crackdown on it. They brought the lights out and that's really tamed things down quite a bit."

Madison police reported no serious property damage and said the number of arrests was down compared to the past two years.

"I would hope that we'd start to create an environment where the students know to come have a good time and leave the booze at home," said Madison police Officer Kip Kellogg.

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz called the event a success.

"I think, you know, we really transformed the event in the last couple of years since we started the gating and ticketing last year, which was controversial at the time," said Cieslewicz. "People just didn't think it would work. But it worked well last year. It worked even better this year. So, I think weve gone a long way in transforming the event. I think that we can now take a look at things, analyze what happened, take a look at possibly being able to reduce some of those officers in future years."

Police cruisers were replaced by cleanup trucks and crews shortly after the event ended.

"It hasn’t been too bad at all," said Jason Zander with the city's engineering department. "Everything is where it's supposed to be so that's a good sign. We haven't seen anything real bad."

Within a few short hours, State Street was wiped clean of any remnants of the event.
