Construction Begins On New Gilda's Club In Middleton

New Building To Open Next Summer

Updated: 12:45 pm CDT October 10, 2007

Gilda's Club Madison moved closer to reality on Tuesday as ground was broken at its new Middleton location.

Capital campaign co-chairs Cindy and Barry Alvarez were at Tuesday's ceremony at 7907 Discovery Court. A large turnout greeted the heavy equipment, which will start the digging for real on Wednesday, WISC-TV reported.

Gilda's Club, named for the late comedienne Gilda Radner, will be a place of emotional and social support for anyone who's life has been touched by cancer.

"I want it to be known that anybody who comes to Madison -- either for medical care or just to visit a family member -- we are here for you," said Cindy Alvarez.

The new building is expected to open next summer, WISC-TV reported.

Organizers said that help is still needed. They're still looking to raise about $1.4 million and Cindy Alvarez said that she's also reaching out to skilled workers.

Anyone interested in donating their talent or materials to help in the construction process is encouraged to e-mail info@gildasclubmadison.org.
