Report: Mold Isn't Chavez's Only Problem
'We May Have To Do Some Major Reconstruction Of The Building'
MADISON, Wis. -- News 3 has learned there are potentially major problems with the structure of Chavez Elementary School, but district officials say a new report on the issue won't delay next fall's reopening.
Others aren't so sure.I-Team reporter Linda Eggert's report aired Friday, April 26.News 3 has obtained a new district report that outlines "additional construction deficiencies" at Chavez, Eggert reported.A school spokesman says it's nothing to worry about. School board member Ray Allen says he wants a special board meeting.Efforts to clean up the mold in mostly classroom areas were completed last week, but new documents obtained by News 3 show the district now has a host of new problems to deal with not related to mold.
"It does seem substantial," Allen said. "I think we need to talk to district personnel on this -- it seems more than just again repairing mold. It seems to be some structural problems."Last week the district was sent additional information by its consultant, Micheal's Engineering.Officials say they've observed " ... a number of deficiencies in workmanship and/or nonconformance with the specifications ... " and say it's their opinion that "these items, left unattended, will eventually result in additional ... water entry through the building."Consultants say these are their key concerns:second floor cracks in the concrete that lead to water leaks on the first floor a potential problem with the edge of the roof around the entire building the way the roof was installed and brickwork and base flashing problems around the bottom of the building Consultant John Lampe told News 3 the bottom 1.5 feet of brick should be sawed off the entire perimeter of the school to get at the problem. He says both the roof edge and the roof insulation may be defective because they may have been installed improperly."We may have to do some major reconstruction of the building -- that would be a major concern," Allen said. "I think we need to have a conversation very soon with the district about this."
"No one indicated there's cause for concern, that were not able to get this work done, so I'm under the assumption that things will be able to proceed, and we'll be ready to open the end of July or early August," Joe Quick, school district spokesman.District officials say the reconstruction is expected to start very soon, though they still need to sign a contract for the work.Meantime, we were unable to reach the owners of the roofing company or union brickwork contractor, DHO Mason of Plover, for comment. The new report may be more bad news for the general contractor Westra, too. Officials there were also unavailable for comment.
