Wis.-Based Piggly Wiggly Stores Recall Ground Beef

Product Can Be Returned For Refund

Fresh Brands Distributing Incorporated said it's voluntarily recalling certain ground beef products sold by its Piggly Wiggly stores after E. coli infections in two people might have been associated with beef bought in Monroe and Sister Bay.

Consultant Dave Flora, of Wisconsin Food Safety Services, said Sheboygan-based Fresh Brands operates Piggly Wiggly stores throughout Wisconsin. The company Web site shows it also has Piggly Wiggly stores in Illinois at Antioch, Galena, Grayslake and Zion, as well as a Piggly Wiggly at Maquoketa, Iowa.

The recall for possible E. coli contamination is for products labeled "ground chuck" and "certified angus beef ground round 85 percent lean," with sell-by dates from July 15 through Aug. 5.

Fresh Brands said the contaminated beef came from suppliers and was not directly related to store operations. Tests found none of the problem bacteria in later sampling of the ground beef products from the two stores.

Consumers were advised to check their freezers for any of the recalled products, which can be returned to Piggly Wiggly for a refund. Anyone who ate the products and became ill was advised to consult a physician or contact the local health department.

Flora said he had no information on the two people who became sick, except that "they're OK."
