Doyle, Lawmakers Continue To Tussle Over Budget
Governor Say He Thinks Budget Could Be Done By Friday

MADISON, Wis. -- Gov. Jim Doyle thinks five days of hard work can result in a new state budget, but some Republican lawmakers are skeptical of getting done any time soon.Doyle said that he believes the much-delayed state budget can be done by Friday. He said that he believes Republicans and Democrats can come together and make compromises in the next five days for a budget that he will sign.Last week, state Assembly Republicans agreed to give public schools the same amount in general state aid that the governor and Democrats had proposed. The Assembly is meeting on Tuesday to pass that plan and other elements of the budget that would impact property taxes.Doyle said that he remains opposed to passing the budget in pieces. He said that it must all pass at once. However, Republican lawmakers said that they're moving ahead with their own plan of separately passing parts of the budget impacting property taxes. Democrats and Doyle have rejected that approach and instead continued to urge more negotiating on the whole deal.Senate Minority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said that it is crazy to believe the budget can be wrapped up in the next two weeks. The budget is 12 weeks late. Current spending levels and state law continue while the budget is undone.
