MADISON, Wis. -- There are many fun-loving terms for Wisconsin residents -- Wisconsinites, Cheeseheads, Packer-Backers.But one term is turning into big business for some recent UW grads. The term is "Sconnie."Sconnie-Nation is quickly catching on with residents."It’s sort of like a movement to take pride in the state," said co-creator Ben Fiechtner. That Wisconsin pride turned the word sconnie into a lucrative term of endearment for Fiechtner and co-creator Troy Vosseller."We had always used the word Sconnie as this fun-loving way to refer to people from Wisconsin," said Vosseller. The bright idea began as freshmen at the University of Wisconsin."We started with $600. Both Ben and I threw in $300 of our own savings and we printed 100 shirts," said Vosseller. "I always look back when reflecting with Isaac or Ben and we say, 'This started in our dorm room?' We’ve continued to grow by adding Sconnie.com, you can order online.”The entrepreneurs have a game-day stand and now they also have their first store on State Street."Being able to direct people to a store now really does provide that sense of legitimacy both for us and our customers," said Vosseller. The store was made possible by their partnership with Underground Printing."As Underground was expanding, Madison was prime already with Sconnie already taking custom orders and passing them on to Underground," said Vosseller. "Just driving traffic to the store is what having Sconnie retail is going to do. I mean everyone who walks in asks, 'What's Sconnie?’"The partnership is a win-win for both businesses, owner said."If you have any ties to Wisconsin, be it having been born here, worked here, gone to school here, no matter what happens in your life, you always have some sort of bond with the state,” said Fiechtner. The local Sconnie Nation store is located at 521 State St.Fiechtner said that the business is already looking to expand. They would like to sell Sconnie apparel at other Wisconsin schools such as La Crosse, Whitewater and UW-Milwaukee, WISC-TV reported.
