Group: Wisconsin Last State Without New Budget
California, Illinois Lawmakers Agreed To Budget Deals Days Ago

MADISON, Wis. -- A national group said that Wisconsin is the only remaining state in the nation whose fiscal year started on July 1 that doesn't have a new spending plan in effect.California and Illinois also didn't adopt a new budget by July, but the National Conference of State Legislatures said that Illinois lawmakers agreed on a budget on Aug. 17 and California on Tuesday.A special eight-member committee of Wisconsin legislators is to meet again Thursday in an effort to break a monthlong impasse over the budget.Four Democrats and four Republicans serve on the committee. Republicans control the state Assembly, and Democrats the Senate.State government spending in Wisconsin continues at the previous level until the governor signs a new budget into law.
