Portage Authorities Miffed By Mysterious 911 Calls

Phone Service Provider Is Investigating

Updated: 6:55 pm CDT August 23, 2007

Portage police are miffed by 164 calls to 911 that appeared to come from a mobile home during the last six months.

Dispatchers have been receiving the calls that their equipment says originates at the home of Becky Gray. But when they answer it, the line goes dead.

Police Chief Ken Manthey said that occasionally his officers are on the scene to respond to one call, and while they are discussing the problem with Gray and her family, another 911 call appears to originate from the residence.

He said that authorities know that the residents aren't making the calls.

The chief said that it's been very frustrating for the homeowners, the dispatchers and the officers that have had to respond to the calls.

Police recently contacted Verizon, the landline phone service provider for the home.

Verizon spokesman Bill Kula said that the firm has done a series of tests, but hasn't yet been able to determine what's going on.
