Monte Johnson's family along with many others was flooded out of their Burr Oaks Avenue home, WISC-TV reported.

"It's bad," said Johnson. "It's the worst I've ever seen it, and I've lived here for 17 years. The basement is like 3 feet of water. The garage, everything floated in there. The lawn is trashed. I'm just glad it didn't come up to the first level of the house."

The weekend rain dropped 4.5 inches on the village of Oregon by Sunday afternoon, causing drainage systems to back up and flooding streets and stranding passing cars in several feet of water, WISC-TV reported.

Some homes were spared thanks to sandbags and the volunteers who put them there.

"The water was up to where the sandbags," said one volunteer.

Neighbors and residents, young and old alike, were trying to curb the damage.

"It's a little too late for sandbags for us," said Johnson.

Johnson spent most of Sunday pumping out his basement as the water started to recede.

"I'm still in shock yet today," said Johnson. "Tomorrow it'll sink in when all the mess has to get cleaned up."

But with more rain predicted, Johnson and his neighbors know it could get worse before it gets better.

"It can't really get any worse," he joked. "I'm sure there are other people that hope it doesn't rain anymore, but it is about as bad as it can get over here."
