"I've never been through one quite that fast, quite this severe. It really came down fast and then we had to wake the kids up and get them in the van and when we carried them out, they were on my back."Hunter was one who hopped a ride on his dad's back."It was scary because I've never been in a flood," said Hunter Fortney. "I've been in one when I was 3, but not really that bad of one."By Sunday morning, there was a foot of water in the Fortney home, WISC-TV reported.Authorities said that 200 homes are now under water in Gays Mills. Many vehicles were covered entirely in muddy water."It's devastating to see that happening to our villages," said resident Gary Knickerbocker. "The water is running at a real high force, so it's causing damage to the property."The Midwest Rescue Team used a boat to paddle through flooded streets to rescue residents and assess the damage. While Fortney is glad that he and his family are safe, he said that he fears there may not be much to go home to when the water recedes."Our linoleum floors were floating on top of the water when we walked out," said Fortney. "I kind of hate to think about it because I know what kind of mess it's going to be. The furniture, no time to get that up. You just had to get out."In Soldiers Grove, authorities said that there is concern over an old and eroding flood wall.Crawford County Sheriff Jerry Moran said the flood wall was built after a flood in 1978, WISC-TV reported.Moran said that his priority is to keep all Soldiers Grove residents out that area of town.Morans also said that 66 residents of a retirement home were evacuated and have found safety and shelter in nearby nursing homes.Crawford County is located about 100 miles west of Madison. For the latest weather information, visit Channel 3000's Weather section.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
